Help with understanding the symbols '~#' and '~$'

I noticed that sometimes there is "~#" or "~$" in the terminal. What is that? I can't make any research in google because I don't know what are they called. I even tried reading pdf's or books but unfortunately, I wasn't lucky to find out. Maybe I was not persistent enough but I am really interested to know what are they. Thanks for the help> Smilie

Looks like you're talking about prompt, the symbol just before your cursor when you log into your terminal. "~" refers to the home directory. And # or $ is the prompt symbol. Use "set" command to see how your prompt is defined.

Normally a $ prompt is given to a user, and a # prompt is given to root.

i typed the "set" word and it gave me a bunch of codes. But I got the point of the "~" symbol. Thank you.
