Suppress "No such file or directory" in ls
Hi

In csh I like to do something like this:

if ( `ls /tmp/foo*.xml | wc -l` ) echo "Files found"

If no files exist I get an error "No such file or directory". I know how to get rid of this message by using

( ls /tmp/foo*.xml > /dev/tty ) >& /dev/null

Now I like to do something like this:

if ( `( ls /tmp/foo*.xml > /dev/tty ) >& /dev/null | wc -l` ) echo "Files found"

I put additional brackets everywhere and shifted around the components but nothing worked out.

Can somebody help me?

I can't get used to file descriptors in the C shell. Which is a bit poor, really, because there's probably only one, but it doesn't really work.

This seemed to go, though:

ls whatever >& /dev/null
if ( ! $? ) echo found

I'm obliged, at this point, to remind you that C shell is rubbish, and say that you should use a proper shell Smilie

In addition to the useful link posted by Scott,
I would add that if you really need to work with csh,
you don't need an external command for this task:

set nonomatch
set _files = ( /tmp/foo*.xml )
if ( "$_files[1]" == "/tmp/foo*.xml" ) then
  set _file_count = 0
else 
  set _file_count = $#_files
endif

echo Files found $_file_count

"find . -printf" without prepended "." path? Getting path to current working directory?

If I enter (simplified): find . -printf "%p\n" then all files in the output are prepended by a "." like ./local/share/test23.log How can achieve that a.) the leading "./" is omitted and/or b.) the full path to the current directory is inserted (enclosed by brackets and a blank)... (1 Reply)
