How can I tell ssh to ask for the username at the prompt instead of passing one in via the
parameter or
on the command line?
I know that when I connect to an ssh server via putty, if I don't specify a username when connecting, the ssh server will ask for the username. I'm looking for the same functionality from the ssh binary on a Solaris 10 box.
You will have to write an ssh wrapper that will do that for you.
ssh -l username hostname
or
ssh username@hostname
is all that ssh on Solaris supports AFAIK. It is a security feature.
We do that with ftp, by creating an alias that points to an ftp driver script. Our requirements for ftp are different, but the idea is the same. Of course it does not work if someone uses /usr/bin/ftp, but that is 11 characters vs 3 characters. 3 wins. If the user even knows about it.

Hi, I was wondering how to change the prompt for my ssh login. At the moment it is like

user@host>
It is in the .bash_profile or .ssh ??? Thanks (2 Replies)
Like the topic says, does anyone know if it is possible to check to see when an FTP only user has logged in? Because the shell is /bin/false and they are only using FTP to access the system doing a "finger" or "last" it says they have never logged in.
Is there a way to see when ftp users log in... (1 Reply)
