Forgotten root password
I forgot the password of root and i dont know


"How to reset root password without loosing of my previous data and users."

Your only hope is when booting single user its asks or not root passwd... Have you thought of granting another user to shutdown or reboot command?

For Linux, for instance, you could boot a Linux livecd, mount and chroot into your root partition, passwd to change root's password, then reboot. Details may vary depending on your exact distro.

There's similar procedures for other systems, but proprietary ones like AIX or HPUX would probably need their own special boot media, not a general purpose rescue CD.

Solaris 8 - Asks for current root password when trying to change root password.

Hello All, I have several solaris boxes running Solaris 8. When changing root passwords on them, all will simply ask for the new root password to change and of course to re-type the new password.
