Sure.

l ? ------------------> Has l a value yet?
l=l RS $0 ------------> It has a value (true) so set l to l + the awk's Record Separator variable which is by default a newline and add the current line ($0)
: -------------------> If it is not the case do the following
l=$0 ----------------> If l has no value yet (false) so just set l to the current line ($0)

Excellent, thank you for that explanation.

If I were to want to include something like that in my script (because I want to do several additional other things as I work through the file), how would I do that? Would something like this work?:

    if ($4 == "good_trial") {
        l ? l=l RS $0 : l=$0
}

or does your code need to be called in a different way in this case?

I would write it like:

Code:
...
$4 == "good_trial" {
        l ? l=l RS $0 : l=$0
        # and other
        # things you want
        # to do if condition
        # is true
}
...

Usually it is like:
Code:
condition { action }

So you can leave the if out and just test in front of the action.
