Renaming files with weird names

I have hundreds of files with weird names, something like this:

Quote:
Patient34.phy.fna
Patient43.qual.fas
I was wondering how can I rename them all keeping the sampleid and the last extension, something like this:

Quote:
Patient34.fna
Patient43.fas
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not a sed expert but this works ->
Code:
echo Patient34.phy.fna | sed 's/^\(.*\)\.\(.*\)\.\(.*\)$/\1.\3/'

It works but I am not quite sure how to use your script with mv so I can rename all my files. Would you mind explaining how to accomplish this task?

Try:
Code:
for i in *;do mv $i ${i%%.*}.${i##*.}; done

Another way to rename file.suffix into file (or file.suffix.suffix into file.suffix) in working directory.
Code:
ls -1 | awk -F"." ' { print "mv "$0" " "$(basename "$0" ."$NF")" } ' | sh
