UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

We want to deactivate a VG but failed, because one of the LVs created there is busy. When we are trying to unmount the LV, it is telling "not mounted" and if I execute mount command it will be informing us "already mounted". dmsetup info is indicating "Open Count = 1".

Please help me, how we can securely deactivate the VG without rebooting the server.

It could help to know the OS you know...

I had a similar case a few months ago, but since I left no notes, it was something quite easy to solve...
But not knowing the architecture (OS and version) it will be difficult to say anything...

Is there any administrator, who faced problem while deactivating a VG in RHEL? Eagerly waiting for VBE to advice me on this.

My issue was on HP-UX...
I think it was a mismatch between what was in the different config files that were not updated at the time( unount an unused FS and mounted again elsewhere for development...) and after a reboot...
So I would start by checking with vgdisplay -v and (double)check all the LVs I see and compare with what is in fstab and mnttab

Check if NFS shares are active for that specific mountpoint.

There is also a -f switch for umount on linux
