So exactly which operating system are the machines in the middle row running?

Middle row is currently 10x Microsoft Windows 2003 Server. I want to replace the middle row with a single Linux server.

The Small Business Edition of Windows Server does not support more than 2 rdp clients, you have to use the Standard Edition, then additional rdp users are about 100 each, less if you have a license plan.

That's an interesting piece of trivia, but it doesn't solve my problem:

Our developers have already ported all our custom applications from Windows to HP-UX. We've moved our database from Windows to HP-UX. We've replaced all our Exchange servers with Sendmail+Procmail+Cyrus on HP-UX. And now we're in the process of migrating our end user PC's from Windows XP to RedHat Linux. The last remaining piece in this puzzle is these Windows RDP servers. The goal is to replace them with Linux. We are not purchasing any more Microsoft licenses, period.

Windows can handle more than 2 users if you pay the license and user the Server edition Smilie. You can also replace the Windows Terminal Server with any Linux distribution install VNC or xrdp(if you don`t want to bother your users with installing VNC client, xrdp provides an RDP to X server - meaning they can connect to the box the same way they are connecting now) on the linux box they need to do rdesktop to the Windows machine and ta-da Smilie
