When I run the code (without redirect) with fmxdbc_listener running I get:

Code:
211   ??  S      2:23.14 ./fmxdbc_listener

If I run it without fmxdbc_listener running I get:

Code:
211   ??  Z      0:00.00 (fmxdbc_listener)

I guess the occurence of 'fmxdbc_listener' in both responses is what is confusing it.

Cant really help you here, I'm not used to ps ax output...
Would

ps -ef |grep dbc_listen |grep -v grep

produce the same output? (on my mac I use ksh for I am a complete newbie on macOSX...)

Z is a zombie process, which (iirc) means it will show up on any ps.

Basically, it shouldn't be there unless something didn't shut down properly.

So grep "fmxdbc_listener -psn" should show the one that should be present then?

Hmm, that doesn't return anything, just hangs until I Ctrl-C..

I ment using ps -ef...
