path
This is my path for a directory in AIX

/oracle/ab/xx/yy/data/

i dont want to type this everytime at the prompt.

instead call the path using say

cd call

You could set this up in your profile:
call='/oracle/ab/xx/yy/data/'
export call

Then do this:
cd $call

or you could set up an alias like this in your profile:
alias call='cd /oracle/ab/xx/yy/data/'

Then at the prompt all you would do is type the word call

How do i find my profile and edit it so as to set this up.Simple yet confusing to me.

At the prompt type in cd
$ cd
or
% cd

Cd with no arguement should put you in your home directory. Then do a ls -a for .profile - edit the file and put it in there (this matters what shell you are using). Either logout and back in or source the file
. ./.profile

Got there and edited it as
alias call='cd /oracle/ab/xx/yy/data'

Then at the prompt , typed the word call.i.e $call
it says call not found.

my .profile is in home/oracle.

what mistake am i doing here

Nevermind got it,I needed to exit and relogin, and it works now.

If you set it up as an alias then you don't use the $ sign. Just type the alias call at the prompt.

vi - replacing a relative path with absolute path in a file
