With GNU awk 4 you can easily reconstruct the original variable field separator(s):

Code:
 split(string, array [, fieldsep [, seps ] ])
Divide string into pieces separated by fieldsep and store the pieces in array and
the separator strings in the seps array.

For example:

  split($0, t, FS, s)
  for (i = 1; ++i <= l;)
    printf "%s", (t[i] (i < l ? s[i] : RS))
  }' l=4 infile

  split($0, t, FS, s)
  for (i = 0; ++i <= l;)
