Grouping the contents of a file

Hi,

i have a file which contains the below content:

Code:
abcde -- ABC
bdhnbj -- BCD
gdsjgfjg -- ABC
gdksgdk -- BCD

I want this to be sorted as
Code:
abcde -- ABC
gdsjgfjg -- ABC
bdhnbj -- BCD
gdksgdk -- BCD

I want the relative records together. All ABC in sequence and then all BCD.
And also i want the count as:
Code:
2 records in ABC
2 records in BCD

How to achieve this?
Can anyone help me?
i dont want to create a new file.
In the already existing file only, i need to make these changes
