Log 2 transforming the column of a text file

I have a tab delimited text file. I want to log 2 transform the fifth column of the file. How do I go about doing that? Thanks!

How big and fast? I would say PERL: google for "PERL read delimited file array tutorial" (did that already today), google for "PERL math lib log base tutorial" and maybe google for some help with floating point from string (like C atof() )and to string (printf() and similar). You want newval=log2(oldval)?

If you map the file into an RDBMS text tool, you can SQL update it.
