I use tcsh, but I also like zsh. You might want to take a look at zsh as well.

Many of the useful features of bash, ksh, and tcsh were incorporated into zsh;

I bought a really good book for a newbie. Its "Your UNIX: the ultimate guide", in the book it covers the unix os, perl, sed, grep, awk and etc..... It is easy to follow along with on your own computer and very informative.
