UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi,

I need to check whether the incoming file has a header and footer using a UNIX script. The pattern of the header and footer is fixed as follows:

Header: Name,Date
Footer: Count, Total

Name,Date
-------------------------
-------------------------
-------------------------
Count, total


If the files doesnt contain either the header or footer or both, it needs to rejected.

Can someone please help me in solving this problem?

Are these the exact strings at the top and bottom of the file or can they change? For example, is 'Date" an actual date string?

These are fixed Strings Murphy. They will not change.

Please display a sample of input data.

To display the header: head -1 file
To display the footer: tail -1 file

For a definitive solution, a sample data is required.
