Note that the x86 version of Solaris has problems with Intel chips with on-die graphics i.e. some of the recent Clarksdale chips. Unless you have an external graphics card, Solaris will only run in CLI mode.

But I think it only applies to Solaris installed physically on the machine. If OP will use VirtualBox, everything should be OK, as VirtualBox presents virtual graphic card to the guest system.

Correct w.r.t. VirtualBox. But note that the OP is talking about purchasing a system, not using VirtualBox.

Yes. But I feel that we should guide him into best use of the system for learning/testing purposes. I can tell from my own experience that Solaris in VirtualBox is more than enough to prepare for CX-310-200 and CX-310-202 exams.

That may have been the case for you but it may not be the case for another people. I have taught a number of SCSA bootcamps and can tell you from experience that no two people learn at the same rate or manner. In general I get many more complaints when users are expected to learn on a virtual Solaris instance under either VMware or VirtualBox.

Running Solaris Sparc Apps on X86 Solaris

I know that Sun make s a version of Solaris for Sparc platforms and also an x86 (Intel/AMD) release of Solaris. Can an application that runs on Solaris/Sparc also run on a PC running the x86 release of Solaris? Would a different release be required or any re-compling of the application? jim (1 Reply)
