There is a 'trap' that exists with the external variable and I believe that it is the var is instantiated when the first scrip runs. Meaning that the last failure is the one you see in the extern var.

We had each scrip check this to ensure that a sequential shutdown was occurring and the main script wasn't failing leaving it's exit code in the var. I hope what I'm saying is making sense. Maybe a better way to put it is that when one goes down it places the code in the var, if the next one fails it places it's code in the same var overwriting the previous entry, so if the top one fails first, it will show that code. So take into account that each step you read and store the return code that it get's from the var. Maybe this is more clear... Good luck..

HP-UX doesn't usually come with "expect". What version of HP-UX are you running?
Quote:
uname -a
Is the script running as "root" or as a normal user?

Try searching all the scripts for unix "kill" commands in case the script is killing itself.

If you have the "glance" program it is worth checking kernel parameters and their current usage. Older HP-UX straight out of the box had a very low "maximum number of processes per user" which could be tuned by increasing "maximum number if users".
