how to compare names of files?
hi,
can somebody tell me how to compare names of files?
the situation is I have 2 files file1 and file2 and I want to figure out which file has the biggest ending, in this case file2 is.

If I understand you correctly, you want a script that will search for filenames with a pretext and a numerical value, and you want to find the given pretext with the largest numerical value?

Examples:
asdf123.txt
asdf321.txt
asdf231.txt
qwerty987.txt
qwerty789.txt
qwerty123.txt

You want asdf321.txt and qwerty987.txt?

Am I understanding your request?
