File names

Ok bit of a noob here.

Need some help with filenames. Cant see what has changed, but heres the info :

Have a directory on webserver - for documents, which is then broken down into year / month.

If you check the dir's on the webserver, or any other Linux box, then the file names are displayed correctly, and showing the original filenames that they were called when saved.

However if you check the filenames via a Windows box, then the filenames seem to have taken on what i would call a 'temp' filename, as in they do not appear as what you have originally named them but rather filesnames such as dk83774~.pdf

Does anyone have any ideas - I would greatly appreciate anyones comments - and if its simple - go easy, remember I am a noob.

FYI - Running Slackware V9

FTP client

What's your windows FTP client?
Do you know a public FTP dir which behaves the same?

Are you checking the files in a Windows program, on in a DOS box? It looks like your seeing the files in the DOS 8.3 format. And not under Windows 'long file name' format.

linux box is on internal network in the office, and is mapped to my pc as X:

when checking the documents directory mapped on the X: on my Windows XP machine - this is when I see the 'temp' file names

Thanks for your responses so far :-)

What does smb.conf look like on the slack box?

Is there a line something like
mangled names = yes
If so - there's the culprit!

Cheers

Sometimes /etc/smb.conf, other times /etc/samba/smb.conf

If that fails
find / -name "smb.conf" -print

Cheers
