I'm trying to replace the string """ with "&".

I have tried this:

Is it impossible for sed and awk to output "&"?

Hi.

& in the replacement part of a sed regular expression means "the pattern space" - i.e. what you found in the first part (") - so you're effectively finding ", and using & to put it back!

Simply escape the & to make the replacement & literal (i.e. has no "special meaning"):

Out of interest: Why are you trying to replace a quote with an ampersand?
