UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hello,

I am trying to use the output of the who command to display some messages.

For instance, if users Joe, Jim, Sue, and Sally were generated from who I want to take that output but display it like this:

Hello Sue
Hello Jack
Hello etc etc

Probelm is i cant figure out how to seperate the who command into different output lines.

Any suggestions?

P lease show a sample of your who output, it's not the same everywhere.

Well Im not saying just who, I was using that as an example. My question is this...

Lets say you have a command ... any command... that returns multiple lines when run.

Who, cat /etc/passwd, etc....

If I wanted each line of output to be put out individually, maybe with a string of text after it, how could I do that?

lets say I assign the following variable:

var=$(cat /etc/passwd)
echo "$var hello, this is a test"

When I run that I get the whole etc/passwd file and only on the last line it prints hello, this is a test.

How could I print the text out after each line of output?

who | awk '{print "Hello " $1}'

awk can be used in many other ways and is a strong tool to work with strings/output of comands.

That doesnt work.

Any other ideas?

Im using bash if that matters
