How to pick only the latest files based on the timestamp?

Pickett...The problem persists..Could you not figure out something from this code..coz it picks up the latest files
TODAY="`date '+%b %e'`" # Mmm d
ls -lrt | grep "${TODAY}"|grep ":"

Can you not put this in the code which you sent me

if the day is on 1 digit, do you have a double space or single space in your $TODAY variable ?

any answers? This implies the script would work fine only during the days starting fro m 10-30/31....Double digit dates...

Well, date commands vary, so you need to see in your man page for date how to strip the 0, which is padding, off the day of month '%d'. Did you try both '%-d' and '%-1d' ?

Jun%-d
bash-3.00$ date +%b""-1d

I guess your date is not very friendly. Assuming man date does not offer you a different metacharacter, perhaps '$e' so it is a space you could accept in a modified awk pattern, there is always postprocessing:

or if your date supports %e:

date '+%b %e' | tr -d ' '

It is not picking the latest files....But both of the above sent works fine
any help is appreciated.
