Passing the parameters through a file

Hi All,

I have written a shell script and the script is working fine, I am passing my MIT_ID(NUMBER VALUE) to the shell script from the command prompt and my script is executing as expected.

Now I have to pass all the MIT_ID's from a .txt file to the shell script,as I am automating this I want my shell script to look in to the MIT_ID.txt and execute the shell script foe each MIT_ID.

Hope I am clear.

Please guide me on this.

Regards,
Gaur

To help you, we need an example of your MIT_ID.txt file.

My trick is to use awk to run the script. Say your value is in column 3:
Code:
awk '{print "./script-to-run.sh "$3}' |sh

HI,

Below is the sample of MIT_ID.txt

122
123
345
345
6789
345678
23
5
67

I want to schedule this shell script, and the script has to look into this file and run for each parameter.

Regards,
Deepti

Try:
Code:
while read MIT_ID
do
  your_script "$MIT_ID"
done < MIT_ID.txt

To use your input file, save this as a stand alone script (chmod a+x to it), and add the script to crontab as desired.

Code:
#!/bin/sh
awk '{print "/usr/local/bin/orsomewhere/script-to-run-with-parameters.sh " $1}' /pathtofile/MIT_ID.txt |sh

No need to kludge with awk and temporary files, there's a built-in utility to do this job: xargs.

Code:
xargs -n 1 ./myscript < listfile

will run ./myscript firstline then ./myscript secondline, etc, etc, etc. If you left out -n 1, it'd run ./myscript firstline secondline thirdline ...
