Computer awk -v????
Smilie i have looked at several examples of the -v option and I don't seem to comprehend its use i tried applying it in a couple of awk c ommands to no avail.. could some clarify the option..
any examples or feedback welcome

The -v option in awk is to enable you to pass variables into your awk script. A bit like passing arguments to a unix script.

eg

Bob="Hello"
Sue="There"


awk -vFred=$Bob -vJoe=$Sue ........rest of awk statement ...........

I'd modify Bab00shka's solution in one tiny particular:

awk -v "Fred=$Bob" -v "Joe=$Sue" ........rest of awk statement

In my experience, you can assign strings that have embedded spaces in them if you drop in those quotes. Also, the right-hand side of the -v assignment is considered to be in quotes, so

-v "Fred=$Bob"

is treated as if it were at the beginning of the BEGIN action,
so if I have

Bob=" abc def"
awk -v "Fred=$Bob" 'awk prog'

it's the same as

awk 'BEGIN { Fred = " abc def" } rest of program'
