I was thinking of assigning file2 to $i withing a for-loop within a bash script like you adviced earlier, but how do I deal with file1 which is at the end of the perl one-liner within the .sh script ??? Could you please enlighten on this one

Run it like this: ./script.sh file1 file2 file3 file4 .... It is important that file containing grepped columns is at 1st place.
