syntax error ?!?

the following problem:

#!/bin/sh
#ftp

ftp user: password@host <<**
put file
quit
**

works perfect ! ...

but when you put it in a case introduction you only get something like...

syntax error '<<' is not matched

just don't know why and how to solve this issue....thx all Smilie

Post code that doesn't work.

I wouldn't use ** as your here document terminator as it's used as a metacharacter and wildcard in more places than I've had hot dinners.

Try using something else, using normal alphanumeric characters. Also, as ABend says, post the entire code, including the "case" statement.

Cheers

just don't know, why << is not working.....

....
while read input1
do
case $input1 in
0) kill -9 0;;
1) echo "..."
ftp user : pw@host <<**
put file
quit
**
break;;
*) echo " retry" ;;
done
.....

Code:
while read input1
do
  case $input1 in
    0) kill -9 0
       ;;
    1)
       echo "..."
       ftp user pw@host << EOF

#Make sure the statement above resolves to an appropriate #hostname and password (use variables)

       put file
       quit
       EOF
       break
       ;;
    *)
      echo " retry"
      ;;
  esac
done

I havent ever seen anyone put an FTP call in a case statement, but I suppose that should work just fine. Also, listen to Zazzybob, and change your terminus of the here document to something other than **. I chose EOF above. Your code was missing the closing esac and I removed the colon (\:\) in the ftp call. Not sure of why you added that. Give this a try. Lastly, what are you trying to accomplish with Kill -9 0? To kill this script you will need to capture its PID. If you are trying to signal a script then make sure the script that you are attempting to signal has the appropriate code to answer!!

Error problem solved...

thx to all, I'll try your suggestions. I made it a little bit 'easier'...

....
while read input1
do
case $input1 in
0) kill -9 0;; # just don't know exactly, read somewhere
1) echo "#!/bin/sh" >ftp1
sed -e 'a\#ftp\ftp user : pw@host\put file\quit' <ftp1 >ftp2
rm ftp1
chmod 777 ftp2
./ftp2
break
;;
*) echo "retry"
;;
esac
done
....
