MySQL Basic System Info Template

If your boss ask you to create a template for all UNIX systems. Max 10 questions of the system. What would you put down?

The system can be any UNIX flavor.

Some examples:

1. system name
2. OS
3. ETC

What would be for you the most important and relevants.

I would plump for (not in any specific order):-
Server name
  1. Operating system & version
  2. Business applications
  3. Hardware allocated (CPU, Disk, memory (plus swap/page), removable devices (tape, DVD etc.) disk allocation from your volume manager
  4. Console access method and power up procedure
  5. Network address/mask/router for each card with DNS aliases (and why each is used, e.g. one per application/service)
  6. Engineering access and superuser access
  7. Installed software (Cobol, Oracle, etc.) and their licence information
  8. DR provision, procedures and backups for the operating system, software (including re-licencing if needed) and data
  9. Security settings (basic OS for user passwords etc. any incoming FTPs etc) and 3rd party software for file control
  10. Basic scheduling procedures (cron submitted, user script initiated or 3rd party software)

That's a quick stab, but you could go on & on I suppose. Smilie

Would anyone else care to pitch in?

We record around 80 pieces of information for each of our servers.

What is relevant depends on who wants to know.

The Change Manager, for example, needs to know the startup / shutdown sequence of the server so he can plan which other servers need to be stopped / started first. I'd probably put that in the top 10. Otherwise the list is a good'un Smilie

Although, as a sysadmin, I don't really need to know any of that, as I can find it out either by logging on to the server, or from our CMDB.
