Problem with id_rsa

Hello All,

I am guessing that the question I am going to ask might have been asked by others earlier. I am sorry if it is repetitive.

I am having a strange problem. I followed your website and created public and private keys to have password less SSH connection. It is working fine if I use "id_rsa". But when I use some other words like "test_rsa" or "connect_rsa" or "name_rsa", password less connection is not getting created.

Is it mandate to have id_rsa only ?? What if in future someone else creates a new pair of keys with same name, "id_rsa" ??

Please respond back.

Thanks,
Sri

Let me rephrase my question.. When creating the public and private keys, does the name have to be "id_rsa" only ?? Coz everytime I use a different name, the connection is not getting established.

Please respond !!

Well, id_rsa is default filename to store the keys. You can use another filename but then you need always specify the filename with every ssh* command.

show us the full ssh-keygen command you used and its output.

@ Perderabo: Could you please let me know that command for ssh along with the custom rsa id.

@ rdcwayx: Below is my script.

ssh-keygen -t rsa
It asks file name in which to save the key. `/.ssh/test_rsa
It asks for passphrase. Just press enter key.
It asks you to reenter the passphrase. Just press enter key again.

The public and private keys get created in ~/.ssh folder.

test_rsa test_rsa.pub

Copy the public key file and place it in .ssh folder of the remote server.

Once the public key file is placed, add it to authorized_keys list.

cat test_rsa.pub >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

Exit out and try to run the ssh command and you would be connected without any password.

ssh username@domain

====================

When I do ssh username@domain, I am being prompted for password.

why not try ssh-copy-id instead, ssh-copy-id username@host to make sure there aren't any permissions issues with your files here or there.

@ Corona688: Its not working even with copy.

check if the source and destination server have same SSH version, sometime one is Solaris SSH, one is Openssh or others.
