What Unix command will allow you to look at the contents of a data file.

well, depending on your OS there is echo cat less more vi to name a few.

I tried the commands you mentioned and they didn't work. It displayed the data file with some weird characters. Is there anymore I can try?

What kind of file are you attempting to view? What OS are you using? On the command line, type in file your_file where "your_file" is the file name of the file you wish to view. What is the output of this command?

it says your_filename: data

try 'strings your_filename'. The strings command only displays ASCII characters from the file. This may give you what you want or you may have to find the application that generated the file to truely read the contents.
