permissioning error

I tried running this command but I got the following error message. Is this because I'm logged in as someone who doesn't have the proper rights to execute the command.

tech@sab 140> lsof
lsof: cannot open /dev/kmem
lsof: kvm_open (namelist=default, core=default): Permission denied
tech@sab 141> ls -latr lsof
-rwxr-sr-x 1 root other 269736 Apr 28 15:55 lsof*

try chmod 777 /dev/kmem

Noooooo!

Don't go changing the permissions on the device files! Some unscrupulous user could come along and just delete it now! Never chmod 777 without *very* good reason.

Instead, just "su" to root, and then lsof.

You *should* be able to view your own stuff without su-ing to root though. What is ls -l /dev/kmem telling you? (perms like crw-r-----)?

Cheers
ZB
