dot "." stand for the current directory you are in.
doubled ".." stand for the parent directory you are in

so if you are in

Code:
# pwd
/home/oracle

then these command are equivalent :
Code:
# ls -ld /home/oracle
drwx------ 3 oracle dba 4096 aoû 6 17:46 /home/oracle
# ls -ld .
drwx------ 3 oracle dba 4096 aoû 6 17:46 .

and also :
Code:
# ls -ld ..
drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 déc 6 15:56 ..
# ls -ld /home
drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 déc 6 15:56 /home

Maybe explore the "du" command. It can sometimes report subtly higher values than adding up the totals from "ls -la" because it is counting real disc use. Very useful command.

Code:
# Size of /home
du -sk /home

# Top 5 disc space users in /home
du -sk /home/* | sort -n -r | head -5

"." is your current directory
".." is your current directory's parent directory.

(ok, I am slow)

Also, the parent directory of "/" is "/", by design.
