Please post the code regarding how you set the variable. That's where your error is.

As an illustration, here are two methods that have different results...
Code:
$ set -- "CFSF090898:this 93490394:2323Chi"

$ echo [$1]
[CFSF090898:this 93490394:2323Chi]

$ set -- $(echo "CFSF090898:this 93490394:2323Chi" )

$ echo [$1]
[CFSF090898:this]

$

# 9

That means that somehow your version of cut is using " " as separator instead of ":"
What is your operating system/version?
Try all of the following, see if any of them works:

echo "CFSF090898:this 93490394:2323Chi" | cut -f2 -d:

Code:
echo "CFSF090898:this 93490394:2323Chi" | cut -d: -f2

Code:
echo "CFSF090898:this 93490394:2323Chi" | awk -F: '{print $2}'
