To merge a few lines to 1 line

Hi Experts,

This is my input file.

input.txt

0 /dev/fd
25 /var
1 /tmp
1 /var/run


1. If this file has single line, then leave it, print the single line

else

merge the 4 lines above into 1 line as below

e.g

0 /dev/fd & 25 /var & 1 /tmp & 1 /var/run

pls help
# 2

Ygor's solution does work... but paste implemetation is OS dependant...
For we keep repeating on this forum: The more relevant information you give on what you are using, the more successful will be the attempts to solve...
I tried Ygor's statement on HP-UX (11.00):

paste: Usage: paste [-s] [-d List ] File1 ...
zra:/home/vbe $ paste -s -d '&'  0001.txt 
0 /dev/fd&25 /var&1 /tmp&1 /var/run
