Ampersand usage and Emacs

In the terminal, using the ampersand allows the process to run in the background--Emacs, for example. But is there a way to automatically open Emacs as a background process so I can still use the command line? Typing the ampersand is just annoying to me, and I keep forgetting; it's just too useful to me. I've tried with aliases but can't seem to do it when opening a file.

Also, does anyone get a "GLib-WARNING **: g_set_prgname() called multiple times" when opening Emacs? I have Linux Mint 8 Helena - Main Edition and GNU Emacs version 23.1.1. The warning doesn't seem to have any effects; nothing seems wrong. It's just there.
