Okay - Solaris 2.7 (which is the same as SunOS 5.7).

Do the following command
which awk

If it comes back with /usr/bin/awk or /bin/awk, then you are using the awk that doesn't have a -v option. Specify /usr/xpg4/bin/awk in your command and see if that helps.
