Writing text to file

Hi,
I know the code to write a piece of text to the end of a given text file is
echo $text >> filename.txt
I would like to know how to write a piece of text to a file using shell, but the file name isn't given. I want it to write to whatever text file is currently open. Not to all text files currently open, but the one I was last using. How do I include such a variable name? Something along the lines of

echo $text >> top_most_text_file

?

U can check the latest modified log file by ls -lrt command also.

Code:
ls -lrt lognamepattern* | tail -1 | awk '{print $9}'

Alright. Thank you! I'll try it out and get back to you.
