what is the simplest command to check if a server already reached it's maximum connection? ( regardless if it's database, mail, etc).

system: solaris (9/20)
machine: sparc/x86

There is a maximum? Do you mean tcp/ip?

yes it is.

You could telnet locahost to see if you get a prompt.

no.. not the telnet..how to determine if a server already reached it's maximum connection resulting to slowness of application. i believe its snmpwalk..not sure on the command though

If you have reached max connections, does that stop snmp from connecting, or are you using UDP or something local?

Some docs say the limit is really the process fd limit (a good argument for using UDP or some sort of connection handoff!). Something like lsof can tell you how many are used, and netstat can tell you how many cnnections are established or listening.
