Are you sure you're running the same command word for word, letter for letter, keystroke for keystroke? If you're root, it shouldn't care whether the device is in /etc/fstab unless you're missing an important parameter, in which case it will try to obtain the rest of the information from /etc/fstab, and of course will fail to find it since it's not there.

Sorry about that, it worked now. I was forgetting the "loop". Smilie

But one more thing, does this method, in any way, produce a different result?

There is one difference:

chmod 777 /mnt/fda

having done that while something's mounted on /mnt/fda, they're changing the permissions of the root dir in the mounted filesystem itself. That could actually be important if something other than root is trying to read them later.

The -o loop in the latest instructions is actually unnecessary -- you already set up a loop device by hand with losetup, you don't need to set up another! If you'd left both parameters off instead of one, it would've worked.
