Help with shell script

Hi guys
I am a Novice in shell scritpting , i am trying to write script , got few doubts here could you please clarify the same

Code:

for ( list of remote servers )
do
ssh user@host "cd /directory_path;command2 ( run a process) ; if [ $? -eq 0 ] ;then echo " something "
else
echo " something else "
exit fi "
done

go to the next remote server

command2 takes around 7 mins to complete , my doubt is till command2 gets executed will the for loop wait or after just invoking the command2 it will exit ?

and also if-else condition

if [ $? -eq 0 ] ==> is it a effiecient way to test whether command2 is executed successfully or not?

please let me know if there are other better ways to implement the above scenario.

Thank You
Prem

Code:
for SERVER in ( list of remote servers )
do
    ssh user@$SERVER "\
    cd /directory_path;
    command2 ( run a process) ;
    if [ $? -eq 0 ] ;then
       echo " something "
    else
       echo " something else "
       exit
    fi "
done

Start by indenting properly to make it easier to read...
Look at the for syntax!

for loop will wait here until command2 is completed (as it is running in foreground, it will not wait for a background process). You will notice it while running the script. if/else block will not execute immediately.
I believe we use $? value to see if last command executed well or not.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the ssh command on it's own completes okay, then $? will always be zero. You need to consider how to recognise that command2 has returned an error. I fought with this using plain rsh and ended up with a calling script on the local server that forced things through. I wanted the output from the job to be stored in a file, so I had the script on the remote server just display all sorts of trace to standard output. We then read the log to find the final return code of the script we had called.

Call the script with the following parameters:-
  1. Remote server name (preferably DNS)
  2. Log file name (or /dev/null to ignore this, but then there's no error check)
  3. Remote script to call
  4. 1st parameters required by remote script
  5. 2nd parameters required by remote script
  6. ...
  7. nth parameters required by remote script
Code:
#/bin/ksh
target=$1 # Get the target host
outf=$2 # Where do I want the output
shift ; shift # Ignore this script's controls

rsh $target "$*;echo Final_RC=\$?" >$outf 2>&1 # Use all other parms as command
if [ $outf = /dev/null ]
then
echo "No log recorded, so no error checking availale."
else
        cat $outf
        eval `grep ^Final_RC $outf`
        echo "Code ${Final_RC:=-1} was returned."
        if [ $Final_RC -ne 0 ]
        then
                echo "rsh error $Final_RC"
                exit 99
        fi
fi

It's not the prettiest, indeed I wrote it quite some time ago so I have refined my newer code style somewhat since then. It might help you find out if your remote command actually works though.

I hope that this helps

Thanks Anurag and Robin for your response and helping me understand the basics.

Yes i believe command2 is the foreground process only..

i believe $? gives the status of the most preceding command in this case (command2) please correct me if i am wrong..so can i assume that based on $? value whether command2 is executed successfully or not..

If not , I will try to check the log file which gets updated in the remote server after the execution of command2 by using another ssh connection

please let me know your thoughts ..

Thanks again.

I am pretty sure you are correct in that $? will give you the exit status last returned by the shell.
