i have some doubt in this cmd

ls path | nawk '{gsub (/\.ear/ , ""); print NR" : "$0}'
can anyone tell what is mean by gsub and what exactly this will do nu ?

It will remove ".ear" if present on a line and it will print the line preceded by the line number and space-colon-space.
