ls or find files under /tmp/*
what is proper syntax to ls all files under /tmp/*, and wc -c ?

if you ls /tmp and 1 second later you ls again, you might have different result ... or even if the same count of file, the files present may not be the same.
tmp is for temporary stuff so things can be created an deleted from there.
What goal are you trying to achieve ?

ok, lets take /tmp out of equation. lets use /home/username instead. i'd like to see total files under /home/username/* we use a program that allows you to see only 10K records or less only. if it reaches 10K+, then prog will tell you.

i want to write a script to prevent it from happening.

Assuming you want total number of normal file :

find /home/username -type f | wc -l

# 5

thanks. this syntax worked as well:

find /home/user/name -type d -exec ls -ld {} \; | wc -lc

Hi all, I would like to know how to save files in /tmp... I was interested in knowing this because when ever i booted into solaris there would already be a few files present in /tmp.however any file that is freshly stored in would be lost on reboot... can anyone answer this pls!! (3 Replies)

Trying to setup user to have the ability to delete any files (regardless of owner) in /tmp. I've tried almost everything... the permission on the folder is drwxrwxrwt 10 bin bin, and at one point I give all the possible permission (short of root) I can give to the user, and he still can't delete...
