awk arrays and variables

I have two arrays values
Code:
aname[1] = first
aname[2] = last

I would like to assign a variable to both arrays seperated by a comma
Code:
fname=(aname[1]","aname[2])

that example does not work but that's something I would like to accomplish.

Is it possible to assign a printf output to a variable.

I am using awk or nawk only.

Thank You

Code:
% awk 'BEGIN {
  aname[1] = "first"
  aname[2] = "last"
  fname = aname[2] ", " aname[1]
  print "fname is", fname
  }'
fname is last, first
