Rotate logs every 1 hour

Hello All,

I am learning unix and basically I want to rotate one of my application logs every 1 hour. I need to rotate that file every one hour. I looked in the forums and googled.. but couldn;t get proper information. Requesting you all to kindly guide me.

Our application is running on "Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 5)".

Thank you
A newbie

Thanks frank. I did go through 'logrotate' before posting. I am assuming that only system administrators can make use of 'logrotate' and I'm not an admin. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I shall check with my admins whether they can do this task for me. What I was seeking is - i want to create a script and include some lines in that script which could rotate a log, every 1 hour OR based on size.... any guidance on this front could be helpful...

thanks.

Questions:

What Shell do you prefer?

Is the the log currently open by an application. If so, does the application tolerate the log being nulled (as distinct from deleted)?

What filename convention do you propose for the archived logs?

How many hours of archived logs you need to keep.

it is not an admin only command.
