You can push or pull, but make sure the appropriate end is tarring and untarring, if you must use tar, ugh!

For one line, I like this: You know/can review what you find, you can choose your compression, you can choose your rsh/ssh/ssh2, and it spreads the CPU over many processes. Exact options for cpio's as given before.

I believe I've solved my problem by using rsync instead of tar. Basically, when I do the 1st time rsync from oldhost to newhost, rsync catches all the files, subdirectories and links and ports them over to the newhost.

tar/gzip/cpio/scp was getting too complicated and rsync was a simpler solution. Thanks to everyone for their input. It's helped me immeasurably as a reference for future file transfers where rsync may not be available.
