i hate gtk and kde!
i don't want to install any themes, but i do want to get rid of the god awful color scheme it defaults to. i've tried editing /usr/X11R6/share/themes/Default/gtk-2.0/gtkrc, but to no avail. i've also changed, and even removed the .gtkrc-kde that kde generates automatically, also to no avail.

could somebody help me out with this, if possible?

use the configuration programs for kde and gtk.

well, you said you edited those text files, and that didnt work, so did you try kde's and gtk's configuration programs?

maybe there is a file you dont know about that you have to edit.

KDE : Doc : Configuring Your Desktop should get you pointed in the right direction.

Judging from the subject line of this thread, and the fact that you went straight to editing configuration files instead of using the built in configuration program.. i feel incline to ask if KDE is really the best choice for you.

it may not be the right choice, but living with somebody who has a yahoo mail account and an extreme aversion for anything ugly, black and old looking mandates a pretty gui. that and the fact that i like my mouse.

what versions of kde are you using? i have 3.1 one, and it was real easy to set up and customize exactly the way i want it. go check out the screen shots thread for an example.
