i'm an idiot!

i've spent about 10 hours these past few days configuring my freebsd installation. i've only just finished setting up my ati video card (one line in XFree86Config had to be changed!), and now am trying to get to the bottom of this other error that I am experiencing. i believe that it is also the root of my apache problem:

# apachectl start
/usr/local/sbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started
#

when shutting down the x server i see the error message:

xauth: (argv):1: bad display name ".cox-internet.com" in "remove" command

i've searched and found a lot of reference to /etc/hosts, but i have edited this file to no avail. i believe this may have something to do with the fact that i am on a dynamic ip.

has anybody else experienced this problem, and is the /etc/hosts solution just as much a pointless suggestion as the multitude of 'do xf86cfg again and again until it magically works'?

any help would be greatly, GREATLY appreciated (not only by myself, but a significant other!)

freebsd uses a type of package manager right? get rid of the apache one, and compile and install from scratch.

i don't think that would have helped.

it was a problem with a module that had been loading default. i commented it out and the issue is gone. i guess i should have posted that? :P

brandan,

Please post the solution with as much relevant detail as possible, so that members can learn from your experience too.

it was a rather simple issue, and i felt really stupid when i finally thought to look in the error.log.

it was a problem in httpd.conf, the configuration referenced a module that was having trouble loading because my hostname was not being looked up or set correctly. i still haven't fixed this problem, but by commenting out references to that module (mod_unique_id) i was able to get apache up and running.

so then it would have helped, because during a fresh compile and install of apache that module would have only been loaded if you had specifed it Smilie
