FTP Server

Trying to FTP files onto my UNIX server, it is not accapting any connection. How do I check that FTP is running, if it is not how do I start it and also how can I assign an FTP username and password. Any ideas would be great.

Thanks

Hi

What unix are using?
(uname -a)

what ftpd are you using?

Also depends on whether you're running it as a stand alone daemon (in which case you should be able to ps -ef (or ps aux depending on your unix) | grep ftpd) or whether your using inetd (or xinetd) to run it.

I use vsftpd kicked off via xinetd, and my config for that is in the file /etc/xinetd.d/vsftpd

All very dependent on your OS, ftp server, and individual config.

It could be that root is deny ftp, and you are using root.
It could be that the user you are using is deny ftp.
It could be that there is a /etc/shells... I hate this problem/.
