I agree. whenever I'm forced to look for support for some Windows-related problem, I am deluged by millions of sites that are looking for my money above all else. I seldom encounter a problem with some kind of *NIX that can't be grokked using google, mailinglist archives, online forums, etc. etc.

Agreed on Winsor books. They are hopeless. I am going to try Calkins and the boot camp books myself based on the recommendations here. I just got 'Solaris Internals' by Jim Mauro & Richard McDougall a week ago and it is solid reading if you want to understand the kernel architecture (who doesn't? Smilie. It is pricey and not practical in the sense that there are no cook book recipes for commands etc, but very well written. It is a good idea to browse through the book in a book store before making an investment.
