unix program to which a directory name will be passed as
parameter. This directory will contain files with various
extensions. This script will create directories with the names of the
extention of the files and then put the files in the
corresponding folder. All files which do not have any extension will be
put in a default folder

What have you tried, or read so far?

sh /path/to/directory.
Change NOEXTDIR to the default directory for files without extension.
cd $1
# moving files with extensions to corresponding directories
for FILE in `find . -maxdepth 1 -type f -name "*.*"`
                EXT=`echo $FILE | sed 's/.*\.//g'`;
                if [ -d $EXT ]; then
                mv $FILE $EXT/$FILE
                        mkdir $EXT;
                        mv $FILE $EXT/$FILE

# moving the remaining files to the default directory
for NOEXT in `find . -maxdepth 1 -type f ! -name "*.*"`
        mv $NOEXT $NOEXTDIR
