The directory file "." will not match "find . -type f".
The original fault in post #1 remains a mystery.

I apologize, because it seems to be my mistake. I'm not able to reproduce such wrong behaviour. So, that means I made a mistake when I typed the command. I think the mistake could be because I could have missed -print0 output format in find, or -0 option in xargs, but it's just a supposition.

I'm really sorry if I have confused someone. That was not my intention.

A loop shouldn't be used for this at all however....

Just for interest:

find . -type f -mtime +7 -exec ls -lad {} \;

This construct works most of the time on most modern unixes and I use it a lot - especially when I expect a small number of hits.
The directory listing comes out in the order that "find" finds the files.
The construct can impose a surprisingly heavy load on system and was notorious for crashing early unix with "too many forks"..

I have seen the too many forks error before, but not much these days...
Always good to hear reasoning behind using a particular construct!

I have only been a Nix admin for about 2 years now. So, still picking up the odds and ends.
